The name “Hillcats” was chosen in 1949 when the school was still known as Claremore Junior College. A contest was held to choose a new mascot, and “Hillcats” was the winning entry. The name is thought to be a reference to the hills that surround Claremore.

The Hillcats have a long and proud tradition of athletic success. They have won numerous conference championships and have made several appearances in NCAA Division II national tournaments. The men’s basketball team has won 12 MIAA conference championships, while the women’s basketball team has won 8.
