The Loyola Ramblers are the athletic teams representing Loyola University Chicago. The name “Ramblers” was chosen in 1921 by university president John W. Cuddihy, who wanted a name that would reflect the school’s Jesuit values and its commitment to academic excellence. The Jesuit motto, “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (“For the greater glory of God”), is often abbreviated to AMDG, and Cuddihy believed that the word “ramblers” represented the constant striving for improvement that is at the heart of the Jesuit tradition.
The Ramblers have a long and storied history, with many successful teams in a variety of sports. The men’s basketball team is perhaps the most well-known, having won two NCAA Division I championships (1982 and 2018) and making numerous NCAA tournament appearances.
