The University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks are the athletic teams that represent the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) in Martin, Tennessee. The Skyhawks compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The school’s mascot is Captain Skyhawk, a costumed hawk that wears a pilot’s uniform. The school colors are navy blue, orange, and white.
The name “Skyhawks” was chosen in 1995 to reflect the university’s history and location. The first educational institution on the site of UTM was Hall-Moody Bible Institute, which was founded in 1900. Hall-Moody’s athletic teams were known as the “Sky Pilots”. In 1927, UTM was founded as UT Junior College. In 1951, the school became UT Martin.
The Skyhawks name is also a reference to the university’s location in West Tennessee, which is known for its rolling hills and farmland. The hawk is a bird of prey that is known for its soaring ability, and the Skyhawks name reflects the university’s desire to soar to new heights.
