The nickname “Spartans” was chosen in 1967, when the school was still known as Spartanburg Junior College. The name was chosen to reflect the school’s values of courage, strength, and perseverance. The Spartan logo was designed by a student in 1968.
The Spartans have a long and proud history of athletic success. The men’s basketball team has won 13 conference championships and has made three NCAA Tournament appearances.
