The Ouachita Baptist Tigers are the athletic teams that represent Ouachita Baptist University (OBU), a private, coeducational, Baptist university located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Tigers compete in the NCAA Division II as members of the Great American Conference (GAC) for all sports except football, in which they compete in the NCAA Division III as an independent.
The Tigers’ nickname, “Tigers”, was chosen in 1921 by a vote of the student body. The tiger is a symbol of strength, courage, and determination, all of which are qualities that OBU students and athletes are expected to possess. The tiger has also been associated with Ouachita since the early days of the university, when it was known as Arkadelphia Baptist Academy. A tiger was once kept as a mascot on campus, and the school’s athletic teams were known as the “Tigers” as early as 1890.
