The Ontario Raiders were a junior ice hockey team based in Gormley, Ontario, Canada, that played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The team was founded in 1977 and played its home games at the Gormley Park Community Centre. The Raiders were named after the town of Gormley, which is located in the agricultural region of Ontario known as the Holland Marsh. The Raiders’ colours were green, white, and red, which are the colours of the Dutch flag, in recognition of the town’s Dutch heritage.
The Raiders were a successful team in their early years, winning the OHL championship in 1979 and 1981. The team also made it to the Memorial Cup, the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) championship tournament, in 1980 and 1982. However, the Raiders’ success began to decline in the 1980s, and the team did not win another OHL championship until 2008.
The Raiders were a popular team in the Gormley community, and their games were always well-attended. The team was known for its tough, physical style of play, and its fans were known for their passionate support.
In 2012, the Raiders were sold to a new ownership group and relocated to Whitby, Ontario. The team was renamed the Whitby Fury, and the Raiders name was retired.
The Ontario Raiders were a successful and popular team in their history, and they will be remembered fondly by fans of junior hockey in Ontario.
