The New Jersey Storm was a professional box lacrosse team that played in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) from 2002 to 2003. The team was based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and played their home games at the Continental Airlines Arena.
The Storm were an expansion team that was purchased for US$3.25 million by an equity investment ownership group led by former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams and Hiza Gay. The team’s name was chosen in a fan contest, with over 1,000 entries received. The Storm’s colors were black, silver, and blue.
The Storm played their first game on January 12, 2002, against the Philadelphia Wings. They lost the game 16-13. The Storm finished their inaugural season with a record of 5-11, and did not qualify for the playoffs.
In their second and final season, the Storm finished with a record of 7-9, but again did not qualify for the playoffs. After the 2003 season, the team was sold and relocated to Anaheim, California, becoming the Anaheim Storm.
The New Jersey Storm were a short-lived team, but they made a lasting impression on the NLL. They were a popular team in New Jersey, and they helped to grow the sport of lacrosse in the state.
