The “Mules” and “Jennies” are the nicknames for the men’s and women’s athletic teams at the University of Central Missouri (UCM), respectively. The nicknames were chosen in contests held in the 1920s and 1970s, and they are both meant to represent the strength, determination, and hard work of the university’s athletes.

  • Mules: The “Mules” nickname was chosen in a contest held in 1921. The winning entry was submitted by John Thomason, a UCM graduate from Chilhowie, Missouri. Thomason chose the name “Mules” because he thought it was appropriate for a school in the agricultural Midwest. He also said that mules were known for their strength, intelligence, and hard work, qualities that he believed were also characteristic of UCM athletes.

  • Jennies: The “Jennies” nickname was chosen in a contest held in 1974. The winning entry was submitted by Cynthia Almaguer, a UCM graduate from Knob Noster, Missouri. Almaguer chose the name “Jennies” because she thought it was a fitting complement to the “Mules” nickname. She also said that she liked the fact that “Jennies” was a feminine name that was also associated with strength and determination.

Today, the “Mules” and “Jennies” nicknames are widely recognized and respected symbols of UCM athletics. The nicknames are also a reminder of the university’s long and proud history of athletic success.
